DPMM Hopes The MECD Would Be Reinstated
KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) hopes that the government will reinstate the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MECD), to maintain continuity in the role of agencies and cooperatives under it.
The DPMM president Syed Ali Alattas said the organisation would meet with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak and the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin soon to discuss the future of the MECD following its disbandment.
"We hope to find out more from the Prime Minister and his deputy, the status of the MECD and what will be done by the government to assist the cooperatives and entrepreneurs.
"This is especially so with the smaller Bumiputera entrepreneurs as the MECD was closely linked to them," he told a media briefing at his office in Bukit Damansara here today.
"There are about one million entrepreneurs, of whom 99 percent are small entrepreneurs, badly in need of assistance and guidance," he said.
He said that the government needs to convince the people, especially the group of entrepreneurs and cooperative bodies that the decision to disband the MECD was right and guarantee that the function and role of the relevant agencies under it can be undertaken more efficiently and effectively.
"For example, if the approval for a business application can be speeded up from one month to a week when the role of the concerned agencies is absorbed into a new Ministry, we will support the stand of the government to disband the MECD," he said.
"But, otherwise it is better for the MECD to be maintained," he added.
Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMMKL) in a separate press conference, suggested that the government form the Malaysian Cooperative Council (MCC) to replace the MECD.
"The latest development shows that the protection for the cooperatives from the MECD has been removed. This has caused uncertanity among the coperatives with no end in sight," said the deputy head of the DPMMKL, Datuk Daud Daros.
He said that the purpose in forming the MCC was to create a channel to fight for the the cooperative concept and also add value to the government's efforts to improve the economy.
According to Daud, the proposal to form the council was mooted three months ago and expressed the view that it was the right time now to launch it with the MECD having been disbanded.
Membership in the MCC is open to the chairmen of all the registered cooperatives in Malaysia and according to their different classification with the condition that they must merge their assets and expertise for maximum profits through global entrepreneurship.
Daud said that the DPMMKL has received an encouraging response to the MCC from the various cooperative chairmen and had target a 1,000 membership by the end of the year.
