Govt To Issue Statement On MeCD, Says Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- The government will issue an official statement on the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MeCD) which has ceased to exist after the formation of the new Cabinet, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

"Let's wait," he told reporters after he handed over the duties of International Trade and Industry Minister to Datuk Mustapa Mohamed here.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, when unveiling his Cabinet on Thursday, did not mention MeCD in his list of ministries and later issued a press statement that all agencies under MeCD were being restructured and absorbed into several ministries.

Following this, several non-governmental organisations such as the Malay Solidarity Action Body and Malay Chambers of Commerce Malaysia and Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah were reported to have expressed concerns over the fate of Bumiputera entrepreneurs since there is no longer a ministry that specifically looks after their interests.

Eleven agencies were previously placed under MeCD. They include Mara, Tekun Fund, Bank Pembangunan, Bank Rakyat, SME Bank, Malaysian Cooperatives Commission and Urban Development Authority.

On Umno, Muhyiddin said that Najib who is the party's president would decide whether its state liaison chiefs were to be appointed among the menteri besar.

"Historically, it depends on the situation in each state," he said, commenting on a remark by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said that a menteri besar is more qualified to assume the role of liaison head in the states.

Muhyiddin who is also Umno deputy president said that sometimes, the top leadership needed to get views from party leaders at the divisional and state levels.
