Giat Mara Sets To Train 5,000 Unemployed
PEKAN, Jan 10 (Bernama) -- Giat Mara is set to train over 5,000 unemployed graduates and workers, who are expected to be retrenched this year, to enable them to find new jobs.
Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said a total of 100 retrenched workers were currently being trained at the Giat Mara centres and each received a monthly allowance of RM500.
"The 5,000-trainee target was made based on the capacity of 206 Giat Mara centres nationwide.
"The centres, however, are willing to take in more people but the matter is still being discussed with the related ministry," he told reporters at the closing of the Giat Mara Innovation Carnival, here, today.
Saifuddin also anticipated the newly-employed workers to be the most likely to lose their jobs this year.
"What is more disturbing is that the retrenchment, which is expected to occur in mid-year, would coincide with the graduation of thousands of university students," he said.
Meanwhile, Giat Mara Chief Executive Officer, Meriyam Abd Majid said Giat Mara centres would offer re-training programmes to the retrenched workers on a full-time or part-time basis.
"Giat Mara centres have a vast experience in training unemployed graduates and turning them into successful entrepreneurs," she said.
