BANGI, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- With its student population reaching close to 8,000, Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS) continues to offer programmes and courses in various disciplines.

The programmes offered are in Islamic Studies, Business Studies, Accountancy, Language and Communication, Information Communication Technology and Multimedia apart from Nursing and Education.

KUIS' courses are at the foundation, diploma, bachelor's and recently the master's levels. The institution's post-graduate programme began in September 2008.

The university-college's student population is also made up of students from foreign nations like the Chad Republic, Nigeria, Zambia, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore and Brunei.

SEPTEMBER 2009 ADMISSION

KUIS' Student Admission Unit Head Nurhairunisa Mohamad, said 2,235 new students registered for the institution's last September intake and lectures have began since after the Aidilfitri holiday.

"The admission included 140 foundation students", she said.

"For the diploma and degree programmes, 1,625 and 470 students respectively will register in mid-October and they include students from Indonesia, Maldives, Kemboja, Brunei and Somalia," said Nurhairunisa.

For the foundation programme, the admission requirement is Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

"Despite the applicants were from religious schools, they still need the SPM for admission into KUIS", she said.

RECTOR'S SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Initially, the foundation students will receive assistance from KUIS' Rector's Scholarship Fund that covers tuition and hostel fees.

The foundation students are also paid RM500 each a month for living expenses, from the fund.

This assistance will continue until the final semester provided the foundation students obtained the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 and above.

This assistance is only for students in the foundation programme.

It was created to assist the foundation students financially as so far no loans are provided for such students.

According to Nurhairunisa, the main source of the fund is from the proceeds earned by KUIS' Quran treasury apart from rentals of the institution's facilities and public contributions.

RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES

For new students, they will be automatically given accommodation at KUIS' residential colleges for the period of two semesters (one year). After that the students are free to stay outside the campus.

By the end of this year, KUIS plans to provide on-campus accommodation for all of its students. The first phase of construction for the institutions' new residential colleges was completed for the academic admission last May.

When fully completed, the residential complex comprising five blocks of hostel is able to accommodate 6,500 students.

Nurhairunisa said the RM125 million project was implemented under the 'build-operate-transfer' (BOT) concept. Among the facilities to be available at this residential complex are cafeteria, banquet hall, book store, cooperative shop, launderette, cybercafe, WiFi hotspots, automated teller machines (ATMs) apart from 24-hour security.
