Zaiton Thanks Malaysian Govt For Husband's Release

KUANTAN, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Happiness filled Zaiton Nanyan's heart on news that her husband, who is detained in Indonesia, would be released soon.

Zaiton, 43, said she was grateful and thanked all quarters who had helped to secure the release of her husband and his friends.

"My husband telephoned last Sunday to say that his case might be put on trial on Tuesday (yesterday) and he even managed to speak to his son.

"The important thing is my four-year-old son Norsofian can celebrate the Hari Raya with his father, just like other families."

She was interviewed by Bernama while attending to her father Nanyan Man, 67, who is being treated for an illness at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here, Wednesday.

Earlier, Zaiton was reported to have appealed to the Malaysian government to help obtain her husband's release. Her husband, Haliah Said, 50, had been detained with three other fishermen and a tekong in Batam, Indonesia.

Four of the five Malaysian fishermen held for allegedly encroaching in Indonesian waters while fishing at Pulau Aur, Johor last August are expected to be released and return to Malaysia before the Hari Raya in November.

Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Zainal Abidin Mahamad Zain said he had obtained the whole picture of the events that led to their detention and had discussed with the Indonesian government about it.

Meanwhile, the tekong's wife, Pang Kooi Hwa, 40, asked that her husband be released together with the four fishermen, adding that she could not understand why he could not be released together with them.

"My children are all small, aged three, six and nine years and they love their father very much.

"I appeal to the government to help my husband because all our children are pining for him and often ask for their father," she said.
